Before We Start

Iron Priest.

The Phoenix has landed.

If my coworkers are any standard of comparison, I am something of a fanatic about coding, since I'm pretty much the only one who takes code review seriously. Which is to say that I take it seriously enough that I hate the thought of having to do it, for fear of discovering once again that someone has reinvented the square wheel. Apparently few people I work with have internalized what for want of a better term I will call the should-exist heuristic. This is the idea that if the code base is sufficiently old, most ideas I come up with have probably already been implemented, or tried and later abandoned.

Having set the Roomba loose on the bedroom for the third week in a row, it is becoming apparent that I am not really keeping up with my comics purchases. Ke garne.

Hellboy: Seed of Destruction, Mike Mignola and John Byrne, Dark Horse:

So this is how it all began. Nazis, shoggoths, activist mystics, and a family mansion combine to create something in between "At the Mountains of Madness", and "The Fall of the House of Usher". Near the end they seem to realize that this is supposed to be a series and not a self-contained nightmare, so they pull back out of the frame to keep it open-ended. I was a bit surprised that Abe the fish-guy goes all the way back to the start — assuming that there isn't some other Hellboy series I've missed.
