And I went shopping, stopping off at the Milk Pail Market, which I at last located in its proper relationship to the rest of the San Antonio shopping centre. The Milk Pail is like Trader Joe's except with less space in the aisles, way better produce, and a less sterile atmosphere, which one would sort of expect for an open-air produce stand and delicatessen. I picked up shiitake mushrooms (I don't seem to be so sensitive to them lately), steel-cut oatmeal, tofu (rather past the best-before date, as it turns out, but still OK), and medjool dates. I marvelled at, but did not buy, California-origin olive oil (2 and 2 3rds times more expensive than Trader Joe's imported brand) and bulk butter (amazing, but still dairy.)
I also finally stopped in at Daiso Japan, which has opened in the same location as the former San Antonio Hobby Shop. I'd thought it was yet another supermarket, but it turns out it's a Japanese dollar store, which means that everything's $1.50 unless otherwise marked. I got some bean jelly and a plate and bowl for the microwave at work. I suspect my plastic containers have exuded all the cell-deranging ook they're ever going to exude, but reheating soup in them is a chancy business. Too little, and it's stone cold on the inside. Too much, and the sides of the container get this crackly, bubbly look to them, and if I leave it in there too long, the steam condenses and draws the lid inside out. Of course ceramics have their own weaknesses, but I was prepared to take a chance on it. Please wrap and bag your purchases yourself, no refunds or returns.
And at home I made dinner and lunch for the next 2 days with the shiitakes and tofu, and oatmeal for the next 4 days with the oats and some raisins I already had on hand.
It has officially been a day.
