Note to Self #58

Cookies from the vending machine still have wheat in them. So do the croissants at the coffee shop. Ow.

I'd been stuck in the Tetris screen in I Wanna Be the Guy for a quite a while, and the difficulty of just getting to it didn't help any. After a few attempts at hopscotching an endless stream of bullet guys from some Nintendo game, I'd jump down the drop to the next level, jump hither and thither to escape falling blocks while not getting stuck in deep holes, and then the two blocks would fall that made a tower high enough to get to the exit. If I could jump onto it. And I kept not managing it, which was particularly aggravating because I could manage a straight vertical jump of that height without problems, but this one requires changing direction in mid-flight on a double jump.

Wednesday night, I pondered the nature of the controls a little, reminded myself that jumping had no particular connection with the movement controls, and finally, at long last, got to the exit, into the next game screen, and saved before getting the Kid killed like I did the last time I got in there by some fluke.

Having all these allergies puts me in a strange position once I acquire even minimal proficiency in baking. My default viewpoint is that anything I make for myself is just for fun, because store-bought stuff is always better and usually cheaper even when I'm not laying out for organic flour, oats, sugar, flame raisins and whatnot. But. The fallout from my poor judgement at the vending machine and the coffee shop has persuaded me that if I want to have a snack that isn't chips or straight-out candy, I pretty much have to make it myself. When it comes to cookies, the allergy situation means that when I can make them without undue effort or mishap, they're unambiguously better than anything I can go out and buy.

It's just kind of weird to be lusting after a good oatmeal cookie and then realizing that the only reasonable way to get any is to haul out the mixing bowl and cookie sheets, and start weighing out the ingredients.
