Furrlough #178, Various, Radio Comix:
David Davis's "Cosmic Dash" story holds up pretty well after the backing and hauling for the sake of the plot is out of the way.
RASL #1, Jeff Smith, Cartoon Books:
Hey, Jeff Smith, where have I seen that name before? Oh, yeah! Whoa. OK, this isn't like Bone, except maybe a little like the later episodes in that city of some name or other in the volumes that I faithlessly sold off or gave away.
So we have a guy who sets up and executes various art thefts, from the looks of it, by hopping in and out of another dimension, which he enters by strapping on miniature jet engines and a mask. Ooookay. I am certainly curious as to what else there is to this ace in the hole of his, and what it has to do with the desert he's wandering around in.
Rex Libris #10, James Turner, Slave Labor:
As the "The Food of the Gods" invades the local landscape, Rex struggles with his editor Barry to fit his millienia-long autobiography into the confines of his own comic, while ever-ambitious Simon seizes the initiative in dealing with books contaminating the real world. This issues manages to get up a little momentum, in a semi-random Flaming Carrot kind of way.
Hybrid Bastards! #1-2, Tom Pinchuk and Kate Glasheen, Archaia Studios:
Hera, having had it up to Hera with Zeus's endless string of affairs, puts a hex on him and he spends a lost weekend getting it on with every inanimate object in sight. Being Zeus, this poses no obstacle to speak of to the blessed events attendant upon his casual encounters with cars, buildings, clothes racks, fresh fruit, statuary, and whatnot. Hera springs this whole escapade on him 18 years later as a fait accompli, and he flips out and does his best to track down and eliminate the fledgling citizens of Miscege-nation.
A few of the quicker ones join forces and start stirring up vengeance. Their grandstanding leader lets them blow off steam by vandalizing dad's place, and then gets down to some serious sabotage, smearing what remains of Zeus's public image by exposing his lotus smuggling operations. Athena manages to restrain Zeus's random flailing with thunderbolts and make some useful counter-moves, exploiting intelligence from a traitor in the ranks.
The art is kind of blocky and semi-abstract at times, and reminds me a tiny little bit of Frank Miller's Elektra.
Castle Waiting #10, Linda Medley, Fantagraphics:
Poking around inside the castle walls leads to an odd little hidey hole that turns out be something more sinister. Some quick thinking and well-timed help from a ghost, or so we're led to believe, gets Jain and co. out of immediate danger, and some hammerling savvy wards off any lingering threat. The ghost lingers long enough to make Jain wonder, Chess gets caught being cute with the baby, and that's the end of the issue.
On rare evenings I can go from feeling like I can go to bed any time I want without it being a big deal, to actually doing it. What's stopping that? From the descriptions I've read, it really does sound something like attention deficit of some kind. Anyway, good night.
