Well, the Python journal script is now in good enough shape that it bombs out with run-time exceptions instead of syntax errors. And now I believe I shall go to bed before 5 a.m. for the first time in, let's see, 2 weeks.
Later the same day, I resisted the temptation to eat up all the remaining raisins on hand and made a batch of oatmeal cookies, with olive oil as before but with brown sugar instead of honey. It turns out that there's a certain amount of water in butter, and a certain amount in honey, and if neither is present, its absence is impossible to miss. Eventually I stopped freaking out and just added a few tablespoons of water to the mixture, and that fixed it up pretty well.
At any rate, my intuition that the melting point of the fat matters hardly at all was proved correct. After adjusting for the lack of moisture, the cookies held their shape just as they did when I made it with real butter and sugar, always using egg replacer instead of actual eggs.
