I keep forgetting how good this black bean and turnip tofu recipe is when I make it with turnips instead of daikon radish. Too often I end up working my way through one of the great whacking logs of daikon they sell around here, which takes considerably more cooking before it's tender.

I am nursing a suspicion that I am allergic to one of the ingredients in this 8-bean soup recipe. I'm pretty familiar with pinto beans, barley, lentils, lima beans, kidney beans, and split peas, and I don't think I have any allergies to those. This leaves black-eyed peas and navy beans as suspects. I'll have to experiment and find out. If either or both is a problem, well, there are a lot of other bean varieties out there.

Converting my old Awk-based journal scripts into Python proceeds apace, leading me to do things like iterate over extended slices with negative strides, and other admirably concise formulations.

All of the alarming uproar in the financial markets, though likely utterly irrelevant to me given my exceedingly stodgy way with money, has at least moved me to think about doing something with my savings beyond merely, you know, saving them. Not that I'm planning any daring investments, but it seems to me that I could stand to be earning at least something over the rate of inflation. Yeah, go ahead and cringe. Most people wish they had that problem; I know that too.
